(Stone Carving Tattoo)
(Traditional Japanese / Old School Japanese)

Round Three Fogging: The Technique Behind That Gritty, Antique Texture
If you've ever admired a stone carving tattoo or a traditional Japanese piece and noticed that subtle, grainy texture in the shading — the kind that feels worn, ancient, and deeply tactile — there's a good chance the artist used a technique called Round Three Shading It's rarely talked about outside tattoo circles, but it's one of the secret weapons behind some of the most characterful tattoo work being done today.
What Is Round Three Shading?
"Round Three" refers to a specific type of tattoo needle: the Round Liner (RL) with just three needle points — most commonly the 1203RL or 1403RL. The "RL" stands for Round Liner, and the "03" or "04" indicates the needle count.
Typically, tattoo artists use Magnum needles for shading because of their wide coverage and efficiency. Round Three Fogging takes the opposite approach — using a minimal, tightly-grouped round needle to build up shading slowly, with far greater control over texture.
Round Three vs. Magnum Shading: What's the Difference?
The defining difference is texture. Magnum shading produces smooth, even gradients — ideal for realism work or any style where seamless transitions are the goal. Round Three Shading, by contrast, leaves a subtle graininess in the shading. It's not perfectly smooth. And that's exactly the point.
That slight imperfection — that tactile, handmade quality — is what makes certain pieces look aged, weathered, and deeply dimensional. It evokes the texture of carved stone, worn metal, or ink that has lived in the skin for decades. In terms of speed, Round Three Fogging covers far less surface area per pass than a Magnum, requiring more time and technical patience. But the result is a level of tonal nuance that Magnum shading simply cannot replicate.
Which Tattoo Styles Does It Suit?
Stone Carving Tattoos
Stone carving tattooing aims to replicate the three-dimensional texture of ancient chiselled stone — heavy, rough, and full of depth. The grain that Round Three Fogging produces aligns perfectly with this aesthetic. Instead of looking printed onto the skin, the shading makes the design feel as though it has been carved into it.
Traditional Japanese Tattoos (Old School Japanese)
Traditional Japanese tattooing relies on bold tonal contrast and rich, layered shadows. Round Three Shading excels in the shadow areas of classic motifs — dragon scales, waves, clouds, and foliage — where the slightly uneven, organically settled grey tone reads as aged and authentic rather than mechanically precise. It contributes to that sense of depth and time that defines the best Japanese work.
What Does This Mean for You as a Client?
You don't need to know needle specifications to get the tattoo you want. But understanding techniques like this can help you communicate more clearly during your consultation. If you're drawn to tattoos that feel ancient, textured, or hand-carved — tell your artist. A skilled artist will select the right technique for the effect you're after, and Round Three Shading might well be part of how they get there.
At Wild Crane Tattoos in Markham, our artists are deliberate about every technical choice — from needle selection to hand speed to ink dilution. The goal is always the same: to give your piece exactly the quality and character it deserves.
