How to Care for a New Tattoo After Getting It in Markham

Getting a new tattoo is exciting — but how you care for it in the days and weeks after your session determines how beautifully it heals. At Wild Crane Tattoos in Markham, we believe aftercare is just as important as the tattoo itself. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Tattoo Aftercare Matters

A fresh tattoo is an open wound. Your skin needs time to regenerate and lock in the ink pigment. Poor aftercare can lead to fading, patchiness, infection, or even complete loss of detail — especially in fine line work. In Markham's variable climate, with humidity in summer and dry indoor air in winter, your skin faces extra challenges during healing.

The First 24 Hours: What to Do Immediately After Your Tattoo

Your artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a protective wrap or film. Keep it on for 2–4 hours (or as directed). Once you remove it, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, antibacterial soap. Pat — never rub — it dry with a clean paper towel. Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or a specialized tattoo aftercare balm.

Days 2–7: The Healing Stage

During this stage, your tattoo may peel, flake, or feel itchy — this is completely normal. Continue washing 2–3 times per day and moisturizing with a thin layer of lotion. Do NOT pick or scratch the peeling skin, as this can pull out ink and create patchiness. Avoid submerging your tattoo in water (no swimming, baths, or hot tubs). Loose, breathable clothing is your best friend.

Weeks 2–4: Long-Term Care

By week two, the surface skin will look healed, but the deeper layers are still regenerating. Keep moisturizing daily and — most importantly — apply SPF 30+ sunscreen whenever your tattoo is exposed to the sun. UV rays are the number-one cause of tattoo fading. In Markham's sunny summers, this step is non-negotiable.

Aftercare Products We Recommend

At Wild Crane Tattoos, we recommend: fragrance-free gentle soap (such as Cetaphil or Dove Sensitive), unscented moisturizer (Lubriderm, CeraVe, or Aquaphor in a very thin layer for the first few days), and a dedicated tattoo aftercare product like Hustle Butter Deluxe. Avoid petroleum-heavy products in large amounts, as they can suffocate the skin.

Signs of Infection to Watch For

While rare with proper care, infections can happen. Watch for: excessive redness or swelling beyond the first 48 hours, yellow or green discharge, hot skin around the tattoo, or fever. If you notice any of these signs, see a doctor promptly. Don't try to treat an infected tattoo yourself.

Special Considerations for Fine Line Tattoos

Fine line tattoos — one of our specialties at Wild Crane Tattoos — require extra gentle care. The delicate linework is more susceptible to blowouts and fading if the skin is stretched, rubbed, or exposed to the sun. Be especially diligent with moisturizing and sun protection for fine line pieces.
