Why Tattoo Prices Vary So Much - What's Really Inside a Tattoo Quote

Short version: you will always find a cheaper tattoo quote somewhere. Price and skill are not the same thing, and a bigger studio is not automatically a better one. But a quote isn't really a number — it's a list of what is and isn't included, and most of that list stays invisible until after the appointment. Here's what actually sits inside a tattoo price, and five questions worth asking any studio before you book.

You will find a cheaper quote — and that's fine

Every so often we get a message like this: someone sends us a quote from another studio and asks whether we can do it for less.

It's a fair question, and we understand it. It's your money, and comparing prices is what any sensible person does before spending it.

So let's be straightforward: you will find a lower price than ours. Somewhere out there, someone will quote you less for the same idea. We're not going to pretend otherwise, and we're not going to tell you that cheaper studios do bad work. Instead, here's what a tattoo quote is actually made of — ours, or anyone else's.

1. The design: original artwork, or a copied image?

Custom work is where we start. Bring references — everyone does, and it's the best way to show us what you're drawn to. But the piece we put on you is normally drawn for you: your body, your placement, your proportions. This is going to be on you for the rest of your life, and there's no reason for it to be identical to someone else's.

There are exceptions, and we take them seriously. Some images only mean what they mean because they look exactly the way they do — religious symbols, team crests, an item out of a game, a memorial insignia. Redraw them and you've changed what they say. If that's what you're after, we'll do it exactly as it is. That's the correct answer, not a compromise.

And if you've simply fallen for a particular image online and want that one, we'll do that too. It's your body. The only thing we won't do is post it as our own work, because someone else drew it.

Either way, the drawing happens before anyone picks up a machine, and that time is real working time. A quote that includes original artwork and a quote that doesn't are not measuring the same job.

2. The time we spend on the day

Wild Crane is not a volume shop. We work by appointment, and every appointment leaves room for consultation, placement, adjustment and the tattoo itself — without compressing any of it to fit more people into the day.

Working faster is always possible. It's just that the person who lives with the result isn't the one who saves the time.

3. Materials and hygiene

Every needle and every consumable we use is single-use, and it comes out of a sealed package in front of you. Nothing is ever reused between clients.

Wild Crane is a licensed studio, passes public health inspection, and carries insurance. You're entitled to ask about all of this at any shop, and you should — a studio doing it properly will have no problem answering.

4. The artist holding the machine

Our founder Ciel trained under Master Heng Yue (岳恒) of New Assassin Tattoo, and Wild Crane is his only partner studio in North America.

In 2025, our artists took three third-place finishes at the Ink the 6ix Tattoo Expo. In 2026, at the same show, we took first place in Best Micro Realism and an award in Best Small Color — plus second place in Best Medium Color at the Nix Tattoo Show.

5. Aftercare and touch-ups

Every tattoo we do includes one free colour touch-up within six months.

We can offer that because we're confident about how our work settles once it's healed — and because healing is half the result, which is why we publish full aftercare instructions for every client. Which points to a question worth asking about any quote: what happens if the colour drops out? Is a touch-up included, charged extra, or not offered at all? A lower number that doesn't cover the follow-up isn't necessarily lower.

The most expensive tattoo is the one that has to be fixed

If a tattoo doesn't heal the way it should, your options are laser removal, a cover-up, or living with it.

A cover-up almost always takes more sessions, more hours and more money than the original piece — and it limits what you can do next, because the new design has to work around what's already there. Laser is a series of appointments spread over months, and it isn't cheap either.

That's the real risk inside a tattoo quote. Not that you overpay by two hundred dollars, but that you end up paying several times the difference to undo something.

Do you negotiate on price?

No. Our quote is our final price.

Some studios build negotiating room into the number they hand you. We don't — what we quote is what it costs. There's no discount waiting behind it, and no version of the same tattoo done in less time for less money.

Five questions worth asking any tattoo studio

Not just us. Take these to every shop you're considering:

1. Is the design original, or pulled from an image bank?

2. Are needles and supplies single-use, and opened in front of me?

3. Is the studio licensed and inspected? Is it insured?

4. Is a touch-up included — and for how long?

5. Can I see healed photos of work in this style, not just fresh ones?

That last one tells you more than anything else. Almost any tattoo looks good the day it's done.

我们时不时会收到这样的消息：客人发来另一家店的报价，问我们能不能再便宜一点。

这是个合理的问题，我们完全理解。钱是你自己的，花之前比较一下，是任何一个正常人都会做的事。

所以我们把话说在前面：你一定能找到比我们更低的价格。同样一个想法，一定有人报得比我们少。我们不会假装不是这样，也不会跟你说便宜的店就做得不好——价格和技术并不是简单的对应关系，店大也不等于做得好。

但报价其实不是一个数字，而是一份清单：什么包含在内，什么不包含。而这份清单里的大部分内容，你要等到做完之后才会知道。

一、图：是原创设计，还是照拄的图？

我们的默认做法是定制。参考图当然可以带，几乎所有人都会带，那也是让我们最快明白你喜欢什么的方式。但通常落在你身上的那张图，是为你画的：你的身体、你的位置、你的比例。这个东西要跟你一辈子，没有必要和别人一模一样。

也有例外，而且我们很认真地对待这些例外。有些图案的意义，恰恰在于它长成那个样子——宗教符号、球队队徽、游戏里的道具、纪念性的徽记。改一笔，它就不是原来那个意思了。如果你要的是这一类，我们会照原样做。这不是妥协，这本来就是正确的做法。

还有一种情况：你就是在网上看到了某张图，很喜欢，就想要那一张。这个我们也做，那是你的身体。我们唯一不会做的，是把它当作我们自己的作品发到网上——因为那是别人画的。

无论哪一种，画图都发生在机器碰到皮肤之前，那段时间是实实在在的工时。一份包含原创设计的报价，和一份不包含的报价，量的不是同一件事。

二、当天的时间

Wild Crane 不是走量的店。我们采取预约制，每一个预约都留出完整的沟通、定位、调整和上手时间，不会为了一天多塞几个人而压缩其中任何一个环节。

做快一点当然永远做得到。只是省下来的时间不属于最后带着这个图案生活的那个人。

三、器材与卫生

我们使用的针具和所有耗材都是一次性的，并且当着你的面从封装里拆开。任何东西都不会在客人之间重复使用。

Wild Crane 持有正规营业执照，通过公共卫生部门的检查，并且投保。这些事情你在任何一家店都有权利问，也应该问——一家规规矩矩在做的店，不会介意回答。

四、拿机器的那个人

五、做完之后

我们的每一个纹身，都包含半年内一次免费补色。

我们敢这样承诺，是因为我们对作品愈合之后的稳定性有把握。这也带出了一个值得对任何一份报价提出的问题：如果掉色了怎么办？补色是包含在内、另外收费，还是根本不提供？一个不包含后续的低报价，不一定真的更低。

最贵的纹身，是那个必须返工的

如果一个纹身没有按照它应该的样子长好，你只剩三个选择：洗掉、盖遮，或者一直带着它。

盖遮几乎一定比原本那一件花更多次、更多小时、更多钱，而且会限制你之后能做什么——因为新的设计必须迁就已经在那里的东西。洗纹身则是一个持续好几个月的过程，同样不便宜。

这才是一份纹身报价里真正的风险。不是你多花了两百块，而是你可能要花好几倍的钱，去处理一个本来不必发生的问题。

关于讲价

我们的报价就是最终价格。有些店在给你的数字里预留了议价空间，我们没有——报出来是多少，就是多少。后面没有藏着一个折扣，也没有“少花点钱、少花点时间”的另一个版本。

去任何一家店都值得问的五个问题

1. 图是原创的，还是从图库里挑的？

2. 针和耗材是不是一次性的？会不会当着我的面拆封？

3. 工作室有没有营业执照和卫生检查？有没有保险？

4. 包不包含补色？期限是多久？

5. 能不能看这个风格愈合之后的照片，而不只是刚做完的？

最后一条最能说明问题。几乎任何纹身，在做完那一天看起来都不错。
