Why Fall and Winter Are the Best Time to Get a Tattoo in Toronto & Markham |

Most people start thinking about a new tattoo in spring, when short sleeves are around the corner. But in Ontario, the smartest time to get tattooed is when the weather turns cold. Here's why fall and winter are the best tattoo season, and what to watch for if you book one now.

1. Less Sun Means Easier Healing

A fresh tattoo is a healing wound for the first few weeks, and UV exposure is one of the biggest threats to it. Sun on new ink can irritate the skin and fade colour before it has settled. In summer, that means weeks of covering up or staying in the shade. From October to March, UV levels in southern Ontario are much lower, and your tattoo spends most of the day under sleeves anyway.

Once it's healed, keep using sunscreen on it year-round. Winter sun reflecting off snow still counts.

2. No Swimming Season to Miss

Pools, lakes, hot tubs and the ocean are off-limits until your tattoo has fully healed, usually at least two to four weeks. In July, that means giving up cottage weekends and beach days. In November, you're giving up almost nothing.

3. Less Heat, Less Sweat

Heat and sweat keep a new tattoo damp and irritated, and summer activities add friction. Cooler weather gives your skin a calmer environment to heal in.

4. Start a Big Piece Now, Show It Off by Summer

Sleeves, back pieces and larger custom work usually take several sessions, with healing time in between. Starting in the fall means the piece can be finished and fully healed by the time shorts season arrives.

Wild Crane also includes one free colour touch-up within six months of your tattoo. Get tattooed in the fall, and that touch-up happens before summer, so your tattoo looks its best exactly when people will see it.

5. Time to Get the Design Right

Custom work takes time: a consultation, a design, sometimes a revision or two. If you want a tattoo to mark the end of the year or start the new one, booking in the fall gives you room to plan without rushing the design.

What to Watch For When Healing a Tattoo in Winter

Cold-weather tattoos come with a few trade-offs of their own. None of them are dealbreakers, but plan for them:

  • Clothing friction: tight jeans, wool sweaters and rough fabrics rub against a fresh tattoo. For the first week or two, wear loose, soft, clean clothing over it, ideally cotton.

  • Dry indoor air: home heating dries out skin, which can mean more itching and flaking. Moisturize with a thin layer as described in our aftercare guide, and don't over-apply.

  • Winter sports: ski boots, hockey gear and backpack straps can rub a healing tattoo. Pick a placement that won't be under your gear, or plan the session around your season.

  • Holiday travel: heading somewhere warm over the holidays? Get tattooed at least three to four weeks before you leave, or wait until you're back.

  • Cold and flu season: if you're sick or running a fever on the day of your appointment, reschedule. Your body heals best when it isn't fighting something else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is winter a good time to get a tattoo?

Yes. Lower UV, no swimming and less sweat make fall and winter one of the easiest times of year to heal a new tattoo. The main things to manage are dry skin and friction from heavy clothing.

Can I wear winter clothes over a new tattoo?

Yes, as long as they're loose, soft and clean. Avoid tight or scratchy fabrics like wool directly on the tattoo for the first week or two.

How long before a beach vacation should I get a tattoo?

At least three to four weeks, so the surface has healed before you swim or spend time in the sun. Even after that, protect it with sunscreen.

Does cold weather slow down tattoo healing?

Cold weather itself isn't a problem for healing. The bigger issue in winter is dry indoor air, so keep the skin lightly moisturized and follow your aftercare instructions.

Wild Crane
