Tattoo Aftercare Guide: How to Heal Your Tattoo |

Getting a tattoo is just the beginning. How you care for it in the weeks that follow will determine how vibrant and sharp it looks for years to come. At Wild Crane Tattoos in Markham, we want every client to walk away with a beautiful piece that heals perfectly — so here's our complete aftercare guide.

The First 24 Hours

Your artist will wrap your fresh tattoo before you leave the studio. Keep the wrap on for 2–4 hours (or as advised). When you remove it, gently wash the area with unscented antibacterial soap and lukewarm water using clean hands — no washcloths or sponges. Pat dry with a clean paper towel, and apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer.

Days 2–7: The Peeling Phase

Your tattoo will start to peel like a sunburn — this is completely normal. Do NOT pick, scratch, or peel the skin off. Let it fall away naturally. Continue washing gently 2–3 times per day and moisturizing regularly. The skin may feel tight and itchy; this is part of the healing process.

Weeks 2–4: Deep Healing

The surface looks healed, but deeper skin layers are still recovering. During this phase, avoid: direct sunlight and tanning beds, swimming pools, saunas, and hot tubs, tight clothing rubbing against the tattoo, and heavy exercise that causes excessive sweating on the tattooed area.

Sun Protection: A Lifelong Commitment

Once fully healed, UV exposure is the number one enemy of tattoo longevity. Always apply SPF 50+ sunscreen on exposed tattoos before going out, especially during Toronto's sunny summers. This single habit will keep your tattoo looking fresh for a decade longer.

When to Come Back for a Touch-Up

Even with perfect aftercare, some tattoos — especially fine line work — may need a touch-up after 6–8 weeks. This is normal and nothing to worry about. At Wild Crane Tattoos, we always assess your healed piece and advise whether a touch-up would benefit the design. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Signs of infection include excessive redness, swelling, pus, or a fever. If you notice any of these, see a doctor promptly. Proper hygiene during the healing process makes infection very rare, but it's important to know the signs.
